The Benefits Of Juicing Celery

For many people, celery is a low-calorie vegetable, but actually, it is more than that. It has gained a lot of limelight as a “superfood,” used to combat a wide range of ailments like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and inflammation. As a member of the carrot family, this plant and seed offer an abundant source of antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins.

Celery also contains essential oils with several anti-inflammatory health benefits, including safeguarding inflammation in the digestive tract. It also reduces blood lipids, glucose, and blood pressure that can be beneficial for the heart.

Although eating celery is healthy, it is not the same as consuming pure celery juice. When celery is juiced, the fiber is taken out from it, resulting in more powerful healing benefits, especially to those with chronic illness. So, what is celery juice in specific, and what benefits does it have? In this article, we will read about the same in detail.

What is Celery Juice?

As the name suggests, it is the juice made from celery vegetables. It contains Vitamin A, C, K, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, water, folate, sodium, electrolytes, and a smaller amount of other minerals and vitamins.

The celery juice is made with celery that comes from the same family as fennel and parsley — the Umbelliferae family. The white celery is grown in a shady area away from the direct sunlight and thus has lower chlorophyll levels compared to the green celery. It can grow as much as 16 inches in height.

The celery ribs are crunchy and mostly used for making salad or soup. It tastes salty, but celery juice combines well with sweeter fruit juices. Some can taste extremely salty, depending on the variety.

Health Benefits Of Celery

Celery has multiple health benefits and has long been associated with controlling blood pressure using the phytochemicals present in it. When consumed with other juices, it offers different formulations that help to deal with other health conditions. Studioshave shown that celery juice contains cancer-fighting compounds and powerful antioxidants.

Inflammation:  Celery contains polyacetylene, which is an excellent relief formula for inflammation, particularly in conditions such as asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, bronchitis, gout, and osteoarthritis.

Cooling Effect:Drinking a glass of celery juice during hot or dry weather between meals — at least two to three times a day, will help you normalize your body temperature.

Blood Pressure: Celery consists of organic sodium that potentially decreases blood pressure instead of increasing it. So if you drink celery juice for a week every day, it will dramatically reduce your blood pressure levels. A compound called phthalides helps to relax the muscles surrounding arteries, thus dilating the blood vessels and enabling blood to flow naturally. To see effective results, drink celery juice for one week, then quit for almost three weeks, and start the process all over again.

Kidney Function:By helping remove toxins from the body, celery promotes normal and healthy kidney functioning. It also reduces the risk of developing kidney stones while extracting toxins.

Cholesterol:  This natural pale-looking juice has been shown to lower the levels of LDL (Low-density cholesterol) cholesterol and the total cholesterol substantially and effectively.

Weight Loss:  Drinking celery juice is one of the most popular weight-loss methods. All you have to do is drink it at least two to three times a day. It helps to control the cravings for unhealthy foods and sweets.

Acidity: The essential minerals in this magical juice regulate the blood pH levels of your body effectively while neutralizing acidity.

Diuretic: The sodium and potassium present in celery juice helps with the regulation of body fluid and promotes the production of urine, making it one of the best ways to remove excess fluids from the body.

Breaking and Eliminating Urinary Stones:  The diuretic effect of celery juice also helps to eliminate and break gallbladder and urinary stones.

Post-workout Tonic: Celery juice serves as the best post-workout tonic for athletes. It substitutes missing electrolytes and re-hydrates the body with its abundant minerals.

Constipation: Acting as a mild and natural laxative, celery helps to alleviate constipation. Not only that, but it also helps to calm and relax nerves that have been overworked using artificial laxatives created by humans.

Nervous System:  The natural minerals found in celery juice have a soothing effect on the nervous system, making it a perfect drink for people who cannot sleep well.

Diabetes: People with diabetes can also benefit from celery juice because it contains antioxidants named flavones that help decrease blood sugar levels and control sugar levels.

Cancer:Celery includes a minimum of eight families of cancer-fighting compounds. One of them is acetylene, which has been proven to kill tumor cells. This compound contains phenolic acids that stop the activity of prostaglandins to facilitate tumor cell formation. It also has coumarins, which discourages free radicals from damaging cells.

On the other hand, coumarins present in celery also stop the development and formation of stomach and colon cancers.

Nutritional Benefits of Celery

The celery leaves are rich in vitamin A, and their stems are an incredible source of vitamin C, B6, B1, and B2. It also has a rich supply of magnesium, calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, sodium, folate, and several essential amino acids.

When you turn celery into juice, the nutrients in the fiber get released, thus helping with smooth bowel movements. Unlike iodized sodium (table salt), which can be harmful to individuals with high blood pressure, celery contains natural organic sodium that can be safely consumed. Therefore, salt-sensitive people can also easily consume celery without any side effects.

Although certain foods lose nutrients during cooking, the majority of celery compounds hold up well during cooking.

Celery Juice Tips

  • It is always better to make celery juice and then immediately drink it. If you cannot drink it right after you make it, just store it in the fridge and make sure to drink it within 24 hours. You can keep the juice in a glass mason jar and cover it with a lid. If you like it frozen, you can keep it in the freezer. However, it may lose its healing medicinal properties when frozen, so if possible, drink it fresh.

  • If you feel lazy to make celery juice first thing in the morning, you can consume it at any time of the day — usually 15 to 30 minutes before or after eating something. If you have 32 ounces each day, you can divide it into two parts and consume 16 ounces per serving. You can drink one on an empty stomach in the morning and the other one sometime in the evening before or after your meals.

  • You can start with a smaller amount if 16 ounces sound too much - maybe you can have 2 to 8 ounces each day and then eventually increase it. If you are still sensitive to 8 ounces, you can try consuming 16 ounces of cucumber juice for the time being. Cucumber juice is mild on your stomach.

  • To make 16 ounces of celery juice, it requires one large bunch of celery. Always remember, celeriac juice is not a caloric drink but a medicinal one, so you need to eat breakfast afterward to power up in the morning. After drinking the juice, wait for around 15 minutes before you consume another meal.

  • When you have celery juice for the first time and find that it has a strong taste, you can try combining it with cucumber or apple juice in the beginning. And once you get used to the taste, you can increase the ratio of celery. It is most effective when consumed on its own. This even means you need to leave out lime, lemon, ice, or any other additional ingredient, which might change the healing property of celery.

  • If you are suffering from a chronic illness and want to receive greater benefits, try drinking 24 to 32 ounces of pure celery juice each. You can either split it into two servings or drink it all at once on an empty stomach in the morning.

  • When starting to consume celery juice, some people may experience changes in their bowel movement. Do not worry! This is a completely normal reaction. Once your body starts healing, the loose stools will pass, and you will find that your bowel movements are more frequent and better than ever.

Now that you have learned about all the benefits of Celery juice - just try it! It is one of the most effective and healing juices available out there. Start your day with this clean and green drink every morning, and make a positive difference in your health!
